The design represents the effort to overcome, with the architectural solution, the practical difficulties arising from the interpretation and application of the building code. The program called for the construction of a residential building with six apartments on a site of about 500 sq.m. The enclosure of the lot towards the street becomes a crucial architectural element of the design, as it is overdeveloped to the point where it becomes a sort of theatrical “coulisse” in galvanized iron dividing public space from the private area as well as the base over which the building stands. The stairwell leads to six two-roomed flats. The typical plan is applied everywhere except the ground and second floor: at the ground floor a stair gives access to the underground level where an additional space opens onto an light well connected with the garden; at the second floor the staircase leads to an apartment with a studio and a large solarium on the roof. The terraces, made in exposed concrete, are really conceived as “extensions” of the apartments and appear as exceptional elements in the sober volume of the building.
